Blog #2: Low Dose Naltrexone

Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) is a relatively new therapy that is used in a variety of conditions that involve a suppressed immune system (ie: Crohn’s Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Colitis, etc.). LDN is typically initially given as a 1.5mg dose, and it is slowly increased over the course of a month to a final effective dose of 4.5mg. Patients should take this medication at bedtime as some side effects include drowsiness, and vivid dreams/nightmares. That side effect is typically seen more often at the commercially available 50mg dose. The 50mg dose is used for a completely different condition (alcohol or opioid dependence).
LDN is a prescription medication, but it is not commercially available. It needs to be compounded by a compounding pharmacy. Here at Longevity Compounding Pharmacy located in New Westminster BC, we make LDN capsules. We can fill most prescriptions within the same day. If you have any questions or concerns, please call us at 604-544-7760 or pay us a visit at 711 Columbia Street, New Westminster, BC.
